President-elect Phil George welcomed all to the August 6th meeting of the Brattleboro Rotary Club held via ZOOM by ringing a cowbell. <ED NOTE: 22 Rotarians attended.> President-elect Phil offered the following invocation:

The paths of our lives are filled with peaks and valleys. When we are on the top of our peaks, we become so self-satisfied that we tend to ignore the things of importance. When we are in a valley, we feel a sense of abandonment and again can focus only on what is directly ahead. Remind us, as You do in nature, that above the tree line the mountain-tops are barren, and only in the valleys can we find the opportunity for true growth. Amen.

<ED NOTE: Weekly assignments for the invocation or motivational thought can be found on the club website. The following would be the next people on the list: Milt Gilmore (8/13), Steve Gordon (8/20), and Jim Haine (8/27).>

This was followed by the pledge of allegiance.  Birthday greetings were extended to our speaker, Steffen Gillom.

GUESTS: Chris Mays and Steffen Gillom (speaker)

TRIVIA QUESTION

What was the first Rotary service project?
(Answer below)

JOKE OF THE WEEK

For the joke of the week, Jerry Theberge told the following:

A cabbie picks up a Nun. She gets in the cab and notices that the cab driver staring at her. She asks him why he is staring. He replies: I have a question to ask, but I don't want to offend you. She answers, "When you have been a nun as long as I have, you get a chance to hear just about everything. There's nothing you could say that I would find offensive. Well, I've always had a fantasy to have a nun kiss me. She responds, Well, let's see what we can do about that: #1, you have to be single and #2, you must be Catholic. The cab driver is very excited and says, Yes, I'm single and Catholic! "OK," the nun says. "Pull into the next alley." The nun fulfills his fantasy with a kiss that would make a hooker blush. But when they get back on the road, the cab driver starts crying. My dear child, Why are you crying? Forgive me I lied; I'm married and I'm not Catholic. The nun says, "That's OK. My name is Kevin and I'm going to a Halloween party.

ANSWER TO TRIVIA QUESTION

The very first Rotary service project, implemented in 1907 in Chicago, was the construction of public toilets (often referred to as comfort stations during that time)!
