President Carl Lynde welcomed all to the August 13th meeting of the Brattleboro Rotary Club held via ZOOM. <ED NOTE: 24 Rotarians attended.> President Carl offered the following invocation:

My fellow Rotarians, you have this power. This power to use language to share your ideas, to touch hearts, and to bring about change in the world.  As Rotarians, we have the power to speak and share, to explain, and to educate, to inspire, and to influence. It is our responsibility to share our talents and ideas and to find meaning in other people’s messages. May we use our skills to provide service to others less fortunate and help them to be self-sustaining. May we continue to grow as Rotarians so that we stand in our community as a symbol of those willing to freely put service above self and make this, our community, and the world a better place to live.

<ED NOTE: Weekly assignments for the invocation or motivational thought can be found on the club website. The following would be the next people on the list: Steve Gordon (8/20), and Jim Haine (8/27).>

This was followed by the pledge of allegiance.

GUESTS: Chris Mays and Visiting Rotarian Erin Maile O’Keefe (speaker).

TRIVIA QUESTION

Who created the “Brattleboro Stamp?”
(Answer below)

JOKE OF THE WEEK

For the joke of the week, President Carl told a version of the following on behalf of Dave Twombly:

A company, feeling it was time for a shakeup, hired a new CEO. The new boss was determined to rid the company of all slackers.
On a tour of the facilities, the CEO noticed a guy leaning against a wall and idly picking his teeth. The room was full of workers and he wanted to let them know that he meant business.
He asked the guy, “How much money do you make a week?”
A little surprised, the young man looked at him and said, “I make $400 a week. Why?”
The CEO said,” Wait right here.” He walked back to his office, came back in two minutes, and handed the guy $1,600 in cash and said, “Here’s four weeks’ pay. Now GET OUT and don’t come back.”
Feeling pretty good about himself the CEO looked around the room and asked, “Does anyone want to tell me what that goof-ball did here?”
From across the room, a voice said, “Sure – he was the Pizza delivery guy from Domino’s and was just waiting to collect the money!”

At our August 20th meeting, Bill Vermouth will tell a joke or lead us in song and Mara Williams will offer a Rotary Minute.  2020-21 weekly assignments are posted on the club website.
