President-elect Phil George welcomed all to the November 5th meeting of the Brattleboro Rotary Club held via ZOOM by ringing a cowbell. <ED NOTE: 32 Rotarians attended.> Carla Lineback offered the following motivational thought by Everwood:

“If you’re feeling frightened about what comes next, don’t be. Embrace the uncertainty. Allow it to lead you places. Be brave as it challenges you to exercise both your heart and your mind as you create your own path toward happiness; don’t waste time with regret. Spin wildly into your next action. Enjoy the present, each moment, as it comes, because you’ll never get another one quite like it. And if you should ever look up and find yourself lost, simply take a breath and start over. Retrace your steps and go back to the purest place in your heart…where your hope lives. You’ll find your way again.”

<ED NOTE: Weekly assignments for the invocation or motivational thought can be found on the club website. The following would be the next people on the list: Joe Little (11/12), and John Mabie (11/19)>

This was followed by the pledge of allegiance. Birthday greetings were extended to Stan Nowakowski

GUESTS: Stephen Dotson (speaker).

TRIVIA QUESTION

What was Rotary’s first motto?
(Answer below)

JOKE OF THE WEEK

For the Joke of Week, Jeremy Coleman told the following:
  • What’s the best thing about Switzerland? I don't know, but the flag is a big plus.
  • I just invented a new word. It’s called plagiarism.
  • Did you hear about the mathematician who’s afraid of negative numbers? He’ll stop at nothing to avoid them.
  • Why do actors say “break a leg”? Because every play has a cast.
  • Helvetica and Times New Roman walk into a bar. "Get out of here!" shouts the bartender. "We don't serve your type."
At our November 12th meeting, Cathy Coonan will tell a joke or lead us in song and Milt Eaton will offer a Rotary Minute.  2020-21 weekly assignments are posted on the club website.

ROTARY MINUTE

For the Rotary Minute, Meg Donahue reflected on the Rotary motto, “Service Above Self.” She observed that there was a disproportionate number of women who have left the workforce during COVID and postulated that this is a demonstration of service above self.  That is, sacrificing and making a hard choice in order to best serve others.

ANSWER TO TRIVIA QUESTION

In 1911, the second Rotary convention, in Portland, Oregon, USA, approved He Profits Most Who Serves Best as the Rotary motto. At the 1950 Rotary International Convention in Detroit, Michigan, USA, two slogans were formally approved as the official mottoes of Rotary: He Profits Most Who Serves Best and Service Above Self. The 1989 Council on Legislation established Service Above Self as the principal motto of Rotary because it best conveys the philosophy of unselfish volunteer service. “He Profits Most Who Serves Best” was modified to “They Profit Most Who Serve Best” in 2004 and to its current wording, “One Profits Most Who Serves Best”, in 2010.
