President Bill Vermouth welcomed all to the August 16th meeting of the Brattleboro Rotary Club held at the American Legion in Brattleboro. He introduced members of the Golf Committee who welcomed everyone in near unison. (ED NOTE: President Bill still needs to work on his bell ringing skills by not being afraid to hit the bell). Ted Kramer offered a meaningful invocation. This was followed by the pledge of allegiance.
As a luncheon of delicious beef/chicken tortillas with cheese, black beans, corn, rice, salad, and ice cream with crumbled graham crackers and raisins for dessert was being digested, the meeting continued.
GUEST: Meg Donohue, Jessica Butterfield, Padma Mendelsund, and Alex, Bella, Sarah, and Lizzy, members of the Guilford Church Interfaith Youth Group (speakers).

There was no joke this week at club meeting since Phil George was not present.

Three Rotary Club members, all a little hard of hearing, were standing by the gazebo in the park. One remarked to the other, "Windy isn't it?" "No," the second man replied, "its Thursday". The third man nodded in agreement, "So am I. Let’s go get a beer."

The ancient Romans called the hottest, most humid days of summer “diēs caniculārēs" or “dog days." The name came about because they associated the hottest days of summer with the star Sirius. Sirius was known as the “Dog Star" because it was the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major (Large Dog). Sirius also happens to be the brightest star in the night sky.
