PROGRAM

Speaker: Kate Paarlberg-Kvam, Executive Director of Community Asylum Seekers Project.

Kate reviewed the mission of the Community Asylum Seekers Project (which is to cultivate a supportive community for those seeking asylum in the U.S., while offering basic needs and accompanying them on their journey towards building a life in this country). She discussed the important work that CASP does for asylum seekers (from finding housing, resettle in the area, assistance with daily needs, navigation of the asylum claim process, educational events), the populations CASP serves (serving 17 people, including 4 kids, will be welcoming 2 more people – coming from places ranging from Central America, East and West Africa, South America), some anecdotes about the people who are in the community from their caseload (e.g., a person took classes to build upon his knowledge of accounting and is now able to work for CASP), the difference and overlap between an asylum seeker and refugee, and she discussed the important work of volunteers to the CASP goals and mission.
