President Rob opened the meeting at our lunch meeting site: Holiday Inn Express Brattleboro, VT. Rob welcomed all to the September 16, 2024 meeting of the Brattleboro Rotary www.brattlebororotaryclub.org
Invocation:
Phil George offered the prayer. We are thankful for our fellowship together with a hand of friendly understanding extending towards other businesses and professions in our own community, to other Clubs throughout our land and the Rotary Clubs beyond the seas. We rejoice in the challenge of life in these exciting times in the spirit of service above self. We pray that our personal lives may be channels for the flow of loving good wills in all our relationships every day.
Rob lead the club with the Pledge of Allegiance
President Rob asked Phil George if he knew how many invocations he has given over the years. Phil said he did not, he has lost count. Rob said his records show that Phil has been in Rotary for 30 years so he has probably given many invocations, and he also recalled that he was in charge of running the invocations at one point. Phil said there was time when that was true but he is not anymore. Rob thanked him for giving the invocation today.
Rob presented -

ROTARY MINUTE
Ron Stahley said that Mark Anderson did some great research on the 4-Way Test. Ron read the following from Mark:
The 4-Way Test
One of the most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics in the world is the Rotarian “4-Way Test”. It was created by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor in 1932 when he was asked to take charge of the Chicago based Club Aluminum Company, which was facing bankruptcy. Taylor looked for a way to save the struggling company mired in depression-caused financial difficulties. He drew up a 24-word code of ethics for all employees to follow in their business and professional lives. The 4-Way Test became the guide for sales, production, advertising and all relations with dealers and customers, and the survival of the company was credited to this simple philosophy. Herb Taylor became president of Rotary Internation during 1954-55. The 4-Way Test was adopted by Rotary in 1943 and has been translated into more than 100 languages and published in thousands of ways. The message should be known and followed by all Rotarians.
“Of the things we think, say or do:
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?”
Note for future presenters; The Rotary Minute could also have the speaker talk about their personal involvement in Rotary or personal background.

Announcements
Betsy Gentile discussed participation of members in “Dollar for a Dream” Raffle. Please pickup a raffle sheet to record sales. Must be submitted to Mara by 10/15/24.
Stan announced that Wednesday, October 9th is our next Groundworks dinner. Betsy, Frank and Cheri Ann are all sharing the food duties, they are preparing porkchops and potatoes for the main dish. Theresa is providing some bread. Stan is looking for a vegetable, milk, stuff like that. He would like to get that nailed down today. He also announced that on Saturday, October 19th from 9-noon we will be going back to the Hospice Garden at Living Memorial Park to spruce things up and put the gardens to bed. It’s going to be weeding and stuff. He doesn’t see that the garden downtown needs anything but he will talk to Carol about that and that may be done the same day, if needed. He asked if anyone could help with the dinner on October 9th to let him know. Tom Franks offered to bring a vegetarian dish for 5 people. Cindy Jerome offered to bring dessert. Someone else offered to bring milk. Going forward we need to serve 50 people. Stan is going to confirm that.
Cheri Ann announced that the second love in her life is music and the American Legion Band will present a Fall Concert on the Common on Sunday, September 29th at 1:00. It is a total volunteer band.
Tom Franks announced that he missed the last Rotary meeting but he understands that everyone got a sheet to try and raise money for the Gateway Foundation. He had a great time pretending to be an extrovert at the Car Show and found it was interesting talking to people. He asked all of us to become extroverts and talk to our friends, family and people we don’t know about supporting the Gateway Foundation. He has more sheets available and they are due back to Mara by 10/10.
Betsy said we are going to be at Gallery Walk next Friday doing Dollar for a Dream, that is the last big push. Will be giving popcorn away to people who buy 5 dream tickets. She needs one or two people to help with that. Next Thursday is our first Student Rotarian meeting. Right now there are two from Leland & Gray, two from Hinsdale (one returning), one returning from BUHS and there are more leads on students from BUHS and the Career Center.
Cheri Ann wanted to know if anyone was at the Car Show and happened to see a canvas shopping bag with a really nice graphic print on it. Please let her know if anyone finds it.
President Rob announced that on the Commons this weekend on Saturday there is a BBQ competition being held by Black Mountain Assisted Family Living. The BBQ competition is sanctioned by the New England BBQ Society and the winners get to go on to regional competitions. There is also a Street Food Festival going on at the same time. If you stop by around noon you might be able to taste some BBQ. Frank and the Holiday Inn Express are the lead sponsors - called the Whole Hog sponsors - and Rob bragged for Frank. Rob also bragged that his son got married this weekend and it was incredible and they are thrilled to have Charlotte in their family, she is a fantastic person. Rob made one other announcement that the Disc Golf Tournament is the first weekend in October and they need some volunteer help on Sunday morning or afternoon. If you are interested in doing that please let him know.
Bill McKim announced that the Estey Fest is this weekend. Check your papers, there are lots of concerts and activities going on in relation to the Estey Organ. We really want to celebrate this since it is a major part of the history of our town.
Disc golf details and volunteer requests: 9th Annual Disc Golf on October 5 (scramble) & 6 (two round tournament). Check your email for sponsorship and volunteer opportunities. Will need help in fairways with spotters.

REMINDERS
Please bring your bottles and cans to the Putney Road redemption center to benefit APPN. Pure Water for the World is no longer operating in the USA; it continues in Honduras as APPN.
Maria Inestroza, the PWW country director for Honduras is continuing the work in that country under the name APPM, acronym for Agua Pura para El Mundo, or Pure Water for the World in Spanish Pure Water for the World. Please remember to inform the staff that the bottles and cans should be credited to the club.
Cindy Jerome bragged for Cheri Ann and the American Legion Band. Cindy is the Master of Ceremonies each year at the Dummerston Memorial Day Celebration and they perform every year and it is a real highlight, they are remarkable. She also bragged for the Brattleboro Museum Gala that was this past weekend. She saw Nina and Cyndi there. It was incredible and very nicely done and a good fundraiser that honored two amazing people from the community, Sara Coffey and David Snyder.
Phil George bragged for a terrific adventure vacation that he just got back from. He spent two weeks in South Africa. The Safari was amazing but the trip was brutal.
Rick Manson bragged a dollar that he and Cathy just got back from 16 days in Italy. Dart said that should be two dollars and Rick said if he had two dollars left he would have given two dollars.
George Weir wanted to brag about his being away also. He and Joan were in North Adams for an annual music festival they go to. This year it featured blue grass music which was just fine with him. On Sunday the bands were great and they were almost all women bands, some were mixed gender. It was great and they had a good time.
George Anthes said if you are at the Street Food Festival on the Common on Saturday, stick around until 2:00 or 2:45. NECCA will be performing circus acts at 2:00 and George’s daughter will be among those performing at 2:45.
Bill Vermouth said he hopes the Club will extend a dollar for his brag, was that OK? The Club agreed to do that. His brag is that he had some injuries from his last marathon and about 8 days ago he was feeling better so he signed up for a full marathon on Sunday and this is really a good brag for him because if he doesn’t make it through the marathon, he is up a buck.
Ruben bragged for his support systems including his Board of Directors, his staff, his friends and the Rotary Club. He had to go to Texas when his Dad passed away suddenly and he was afforded lots of leeway and support in his travels.
PROGRAM
Speaker:
Gateway Board Meeting
George Anthes, Secretary, called to order the 39th Annual Meeting of the Gateway Foundation. Every member of the Brattleboro Rotary Club is also a member of the separate 501 (c) (3) Gateway Foundation which is the organization that can take your tax advantaged contributions. That is where we hold the funds for our scholarships that the Scholarship Committee gives out. Proper notice of this meeting has been given. George would like to acknowledge in particular all of the work that Rotarians do especially the Christmas Trees, Dollar for a Dream and especially the tremendously burdensome work the Board does in meeting twice a year. Bill Vermouth in particular, as our Treasurer, has really been the only one who does any work and he has stepped up as we lost our President Carl Lynde this year. So Bill has stepped in as the acting President. Also on the Board are John Mabie, Gina Pattison, Carl and Roger Allbee. Last year they neglected to have the membership elect Rob Szpila as the incoming Rotary President so he has now been elected to the Gateway Board and along with Chris Hart. George entertained a motion to waive the reading of the annual minutes last year which was moved, seconded and passed unanimously. George asked Bill Vermouth to present the Treasurers Report. Bill said that there was a Balance and Income statement on each table for last year and also a copy of his Treasurer’s Report. There is over $400,000 in the fund at this point which is a record again this year. Although it is not reflected on the Balance Sheet, because there were some liabilities for scholarships, this is the first time that he recalls in September that we do not have any outstanding liabilities for scholarships. So people are using it, they know about it and there is good communication and that is due to John Mabie’s group, for getting the information out to Students and having them know what is involved. Kudos to that group. There is no more Amazon Smile money coming in, they have discontinued that. Bill opened it up for questions and answered questions about what is given out each year and how it is funded and distributed. Dart talked about how the Gateway Foundation was started. George Anthes entertained a motion to accept the Treasurer’s Report as presented. Motion was moved, seconded and passed unanimously. George thanked Carl Lynde for being the Gateway President in the past, he has stepped down this year. George asked for a motion to accept the new slate of Officers for this year: George Anthes, Bill Vermouth, Tami Purcell, John Mabie, Gina Pattison, Rob Szpila, Chris Hart and Mark Anderson. Motion was made, seconded and passed unanimously. There will be a brief Board meeting following this meeting. Motion was made to adjourn the meeting which was seconded and passed.
Rotary meeting adjourned at 12:56.
