WELCOME

President Bill Vermouth welcomed all to the February 14rd meeting of the Brattleboro Rotary Club held at the American Legion in Brattleboro. Members of the Gateway Foundation welcomed members and guests to the meeting <ED NOTE: While the Gateway Board knows how to manage its $300,000 endowment for scholarships, it does not know the meaning of unison.> Rob Szpila offered a meaningful invocation by reciting Rotary’s 4-Way Test:

Of the things we think, say or do
  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

This was followed by the pledge of allegiance.

As a luncheon of baked chicken legs, ham, black beans, carrots, rice, salad, rolls and brownies for dessert was being digested, the meeting continued.

GUESTS: Larry Rouse (Sandy's Valentine for 41 years) and Cara Wolff (speaker)

TRIVIA QUESTION

Who created Rotary’s 4-Way Test?
 (Answer below.)

JOKE

For the joke of the week, Ana Saavedra told the following:

A farmer drove to a neighbor’s farmhouse and knocked at the door.
A boy, about 9, opened the door.
"Is your dad or mom home?" said the farmer.
"No, they went to town."
"How about your brother, Howard? Is he here?"
"No, he went with Mom and Dad."
The farmer stood there for a few minutes, shifting from one foot to the other, mumbling to himself, when the young boy says, "I know where all the tools are, if you want to borrow one, or I can give Dad a message."
"Well," said the farmer uncomfortably, "No, I really want to talk to your Dad, about your brother Howard getting my daughter Suzy pregnant!".
The boy thought for a moment, hen says, "You’ll have to talk to my Dad about that. I know he charges $50 for the bulls and $15 for the pigs, but I have no idea how much he charges for Howard."

ANSWER TO TRIVIA QUESTION

One of the world’s most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics is The Four-Way Test, which was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor (who later served as RI president) when he was asked to take charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy. To learn more about the history of the 4-Way Test, click here
