WELCOME

President Carla Lineback welcomed all to the August 22nd meeting of the Brattleboro Rotary Club held at the American Legion in Brattleboro. <ED NOTE: President Carla needs to work on her bell ringing skills.> Phil George offered the following meaningful invocation:
O Master, grant that we may understand that by giving generously and freely we will also receive all that we need in abundance. May we guide our lives by the generosity that will ever return to us more understanding, more acceptance, and more love. Amen.

This was followed by the pledge of allegiance. Birthday greetings were extended to Joe Little. As a luncheon of pasta with chicken and pepper jack cheese, pasta with pepper jack cheese, roasted pork, seasoned corn, tofu, salad, bread, and chocolate brownies for dessert was being digested, the meeting continued.

GUESTS: Visiting Rotarian Debbie Cox (Sunrise), Teddy Kramer (1st posting for membership), Kate Barry (1st posting for membership), and Cathy Mullins

TRIVIA QUESTION

When was the last time the Baltimore Orioles won a World Series?

 (Answer below.)

JOKE OF THE WEEK

For today’s joke, Rich Carroll offered a version of the following:

A couple in their nineties are both having problems remembering things. During a checkup, the doctor tells them that they're physically okay, but they might want to start writing things down to help them remember.

Later that night, while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair. "Want anything while I'm in the kitchen?" he asks.

"Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?"

"Sure."

"Don't you think you should write it down so you can remember it?" she asks.

"No, I can remember it."

"Well, I'd like some strawberries on top, too. Maybe you should write it down, so as not to forget it?"

He says, "I can remember that. You want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries."

"I'd also like whipped cream. I'm certain you'll forget that, write it down?" she asks.

Irritated, he says, "I don't need to write it down, I can remember it! Ice cream with strawberries and whipped cream - I got it, for goodness sake!"

Then he toddles into the kitchen. After about 20 minutes, the old man returns from the kitchen and hands his wife a plate of bacon and eggs. She stares at the plate for a moment.

"Where's my toast?"

ROTARY MINUTE

For the Rotary Minute, Marty Cohn reminded us that forty years ago, in 1979, Rotary International became involved with polio when it committed to providing OPV to six million children in the Philippines (as part of its new Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) program). Spurred by the success of the program in this and other poor countries, Rotary worked with Dr. Sabin on a plan to immunize all children against polio. This gave rise to Rotary’s Polio Plus program in 1985.
