WELCOME

President Jeff Hagstrom welcomed a small but dedicated group to the June 22nd meeting of the Brattleboro Rotary Club held at the American Legion in Brattleboro. Jeff Hagstrom offered a meaningful invocation written by Shawn Bird of Shuswap Rotary (5060 BC Canada):
THANKS
Today we are thankful for all we’ve received
However we live, we firmly believe
All is a blessing that we must pass on.
No matter our status or where we have gone.
Kindness and generosity are what we impart
Showing the world what’s in Rotary’s heart

This was followed by the pledge of allegiance. Birthday greetings were extended to Jim Haine, Sandy Rouse and Dave Twombly.

As a luncheon of chicken, pasta salad, chickpea pasta salad, zucchini/squash spaghetti, salad, rolls and brownies and cheesecake squares for dessert was being digested, the meeting continued.

Guests: Jesse and Ben (Cindy Jerome’s sons); Melanie Boese and Eli Gould (speakers)

TRIVIA QUESTION

In 1911 Paul Harris gave Chesley Perry a budget of
$25.44 to complete a daunting task. What was the task?

(answer below)

JOKE / SONG OF THE WEEK

For our Rotary joke, Cindy Jerome told versions of the following two jokes:

1. A Minneapolis couple decided to go to Florida to thaw out during a particularly icy winter. They planned to stay at the same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier. Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel schedules. So, the husband left Minneapolis and flew to Florida on Thursday, with the wife flying down the following day. The husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an e-mail to his wife. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her e-mail address, and without realizing his error, sent the e-mail. Meanwhile, somewhere in Houston, a widow just returned home from her husband’s funeral. He was a minister who was called home to glory following a heart attack. The widow decided to check her e-mail since she was expecting messages from relatives and friends. After reading the first message, she screamed and fainted. The widow’s son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read:
To: My Loving Wife
Subject: I’ve Arrived
Date: November 18, 2004
I know you’re surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and you are allowed to send e-mails to your loved ones. I’ve just arrived and have been checked in. I see that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then! Hope your journey is as uneventful as mine was.
PS. Sure is freaking hot down here.

2. Sitting on the side of the highway waiting to catch speeding drivers, a State Police Officer sees a car puttering along at 22 MPH. He thinks to himself, “This driver is just as dangerous as a speeder!” So he turns on his lights and pulls the driver over. Approaching the car, he notices that there are five old ladies — two in the front seat and three in the back – eyes wide and white as ghosts. The driver, obviously confused, says to him, “Officer, I don’t understand, I was doing exactly the speed limit! What seems to be the problem?” “Ma’am,” the officer replies, “You weren’t speeding, but you should know that driving slower than the speed limit can also be a danger to other drivers.” “Slower than the speed limit?” she asked. No sir, I was doing the speed limit exactly… Twenty-Two miles an hour!” the old woman says a bit proudly. The State Police officer, trying to contain a chuckle explains to her that “22” was the route number, not the speed limit. A bit embarrassed, the woman grinned and thanked the officer for pointing out her error. “But before I let you go, Ma’am, I have to ask… Is everyone in this car ok? These women seem awfully shaken and they haven’t muttered a single peep this whole time.” the officer asks. “Oh, they’ll be alright in a minute officer. We just got off Route 119.”
