President Carl Lynde welcomed all to the August 27th meeting of the Brattleboro Rotary Club held via ZOOM. <ED NOTE: 34 Rotarians attended.> Jim Haine offered the following inspirational thought:

Oh, the Lord is good to me,
And so I thank the Lord

The sun, and the rain, and the apple seed.
The Lord is good to me.

TRIVIA QUESTION

When did the 1918 Flu pandemic end?
(Answer below)

JOKE OF THE WEEK

For the joke of the week, George Weir told the following:

The Montana State Department of Fish and Wildlife is advising golfers to take extra precautions, and be on the alert for bears while playing on Gallatin, Helena, and Lewis and Clark National Forest’s golf courses. They advise golfers to wear noise-producing devices such as little bells on their clothing to alert, but not to startle the bears unexpectedly. They also advise golfers to carry pepper spray in the case of an encounter with a bear. They say that it’s also a good idea to watch for signs of bear activity on the courses. They recommend that golfers be educated so that they can recognize the difference between Black bear and Grizzly bear droppings. Black bear droppings are smaller and contain remains of nuts, berries and possibly squirrel, rabbit or gopher fur. Grizzly bear droppings have small bells, golf-gloves, sunglasses, and other similar golf items in them and they usually smell like pepper spray.

ANSWER TO TRIVIA QUESTION

The Spanish flu, also known as the 1918 flu pandemic, was an unusually deadly influenza pandemic caused by the H1N1 influenza A virus. Lasting from February 1918 to April 1920, it infected 500 million people–about a third of the world's population at the time–in four successive waves.
