WELCOME

President Bill Vermouth welcomed all to the April 11th meeting of the Brattleboro Rotary Club held at the American Legion in Brattleboro. Members of the Golf Committee welcomed members and guests <ED NOTE: Enthusiasm was definitely lacking>. Meg Donahue offered the following meaningful invocation "The Man In The Arena" by Theodore Roosevelt from a speech at the Sorbonne Paris, France on April 23, 1910:
"It is not the critic who counts, not the one who points out how the strong man stumbled or how the doer of deeds might have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred with sweat and dust and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, and spends himself in a worthy cause; who, if he wins, knows the triumph of high achievement; and who, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat."

This was followed by the pledge of allegiance. Birthday greetings were extended to John Mabie and Maureen Pinger, our premier food server. 

 

As a luncheon of ham, chicken, mac & cheese,, green beans, salad, rolls and blondies for dessert was being digested, the meeting continued.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
 
For the joke of the week, Marty Cohn told the following:
 
This guy walks into a bar on the top of a very tall building. He sits down, orders a huge beer, chugs it, walks over to the window, and jumps out. Five minutes later, the guy walks into the bar again, orders another huge beer, chugs it, walks over to the window, and jumps out again. Five minutes later, he re-appears and repeats the whole thing. About half an hour later, another guy at the bar stops the first guy and says, "hey, how the hell are you doing that?!" The first guy responds, "oh, it's really simple physics. When you chug the beer, it makes you all warm inside and since warm air rises, if you just hold your breath you become lighter than air and float down to the sidewalk." "WOW!" exclaims the second man, "I gotta try that!" So he orders a huge beer, chugs it, goes over to the window, jumps out, and splats on the sidewalk below. The bartender looks over to the first man and says, "Superman, you're an asshole when you're drunk."

  1. Marty Cohn – for the Club’s efforts at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Illinois District contacted us to help direct $5,ooo to help with residents victimized by the recent in climate weather. In turn we connected them with The B.E.A.R. Project, which stands for Be Excited About Reading, is an amazing local resource helping deliver food, water, and medicine to shut-ins. They also regularly provide opportunities to youth for clothes, food, a safe place to hang out, books to read, help with homework, sports, and camps for kids, and, most of all, suicide prevention help. This organization is run by two extremely dedicated grandmothers Tiny DeCory and  Eileen Janis.
